Design More so you Speak Less

I ask a lot of questions about what it is you have built, and I design graphics that will help you sell it. It should become abundantly clear to your customers that you view great design as vital, as paramount, in the presentation, selling, and use of your hundreds of hours of work. Customers may not be able to describe it, but good design speaks below the sound barrier. You can feel it. This often begins with designing either the look and feel of the project as a whole, or the master logo, the pinnacle identity from which all power flows. Sometimes you spend a hundred bucks offshore to get part of a job done.

Your identity is not one of them.

Identities require cultural comprehension and robust communication.

DOONFACE - A Site for the Human Face

DOONFACE begins with portraits and is the illustration capability of DOON. The world of illustration has risen from it's slumber, no doubt shaken awake by the preponderance of a camera in every hand. DOONFACE rises far above the everyday image. These illustrations are meticulously hand-drawn on the Mac and are intended as alternatives to photographs whilst incorporating photography. They do not sit on the fence, but live on both sides of the fence. Accuracy of character is paramount, whether person or product. DOONSHOTS

I have a need to photograph my world and as I do, it becomes more beautiful. What I capture will change in the next moment. The work I do with a camera has at its heart, design. No great photograph in history was not also a well-designed photograph. So I look for design first. My work takes no elaborate setup. No studios. I shoot with the camera I have. These are not Photoshop montages. Contact Howard Stein at 347 202 7817 or email hbs@howardstein.com
MORE PHOTOGRAPHY HERE:
A major part of my photography involves windows and reflections, usually shot in New York City. I am also involved in an ongoing series of my boxer dogs, being careful not to stray into "cute".

DOON

PATTERNS FOR SURFACES

These patterns are created for architectural interiors, and products. I am interested in their being used transparently and translucently. They are large, and as vectors infinitely customizable.

Above: Color can be reduced to a small number to accommodate manufacturing requirements. Again, a simple pattern idea is enlivened by having almost endless levels of detail.

Above: BSQ 1041b  —  54 in X 54 in If used as textiles or in upholstery, these are enormous and not for the faint of heart.

Above: This pattern is available in dozens of color combinations. Striking elements hang in balance and very small details maintain interest, texture, and life.

THE PLATES! A swarm of magnolias fills a dinner plate. Most patterns are adaptable to the tabletop industry.
Dinnerplate_37l
A dinner plate with a motif adapted from a large pattern. It is lyrical and lightly references patterns in history though completely modern in design.
Dinnerplate_26l-copy
Plate designs are always cognizant of the need of chefs to plate their food with an art of their own. These, therefore, are meant to complement, enhance, and inspire the work of the chef.

The Wynnefield Logo

Often design is deployed to reconfigure something done years ago, when, in the scramble to bring a product or service to market, a logo was instituted without adequate time and attention by a design professional. One later sees it needs attention. A The executives at Wynnefield Capital, a financial management company, had used a drawing sketched by an architecture student as their logo for nearly twenty years. I was hired to redesign it, maintaining the identity of the original building which had historical significance for the company. The building was completely redrawn, as was the typography and the design applied to all collateral material.

DOONCARD: "Here's my card."

YES, although it's 2011 we still find the need to hand each other some paper to confirm that we've met. Instead of saying, "no thank you" to a card we accept it, and put it in our pocket, sometimes to be squished by keys and coins.

DOONCARDS are crafted personal networking cards, the one small physical item in your virtual world. The size of a business card, a DOONCARD is a badge of unique personality and branding, brandished with ease and confidence. This is the true meaning of, "Here is my card." I create each card individually, and their exclusivity and scarcity create their value. DOONCARDS are the competition. They approach the concept of a business card from the inside out. The owner of a DOONCARD starts a DOONCARD.

DOONWORKS

LOOKING BACK

In the years before I founded the company DOON, I went rafting on visual rivers, never knowing where I would land, and I still don't. These avenues I travel are merging then splitting, ever informed by the moment to moment change about me. This is a little history. These used to be carried as prints in French Pressbook portfolios, and now the weight of the briefcase is gone. Please see more at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=84266&id=86597828939
